Abstract

Transplantation is the most efficient alternative to treat terminal functional kidney failure. To synthesize the literature on the topic, this systematic review sought to retrieve evidence that empirically analyzed the frequency of kidney transplantation in Brazil, relating it to the COVID-19 pandemic. The PUBMED, LILACS and SCIELO databases were consulted using the descriptors: "Transplantation", "Kidney", "COVID-19", and "Brazil". Thus, 146 studies were retrieved and only six were included in the review. The review showed that the COVID-19 pandemic had a negative impact on the number of kidney transplants, increased the transplant waiting list, reduced the number of donors, and there were reports of infections and deaths among patients undergoing kidney treatment and transplant recipients during the pandemic. These findings emphasize the need for more research and attention in the area of kidney transplantation and mitigate the effect of health crises similares to COVID-19.
