Abstract

A history of depression is associated with unfavorable maternal outcomes. The objective was to analyze adherence to medical prescriptions and to recommendations given by health professionals and reported by pregnant women with a previous history of depression in Brazil, 2019. Data were extracted from the 2019-National Health Survey, a household survey coordinated by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics. Almost 90% of the women reported having received medical prescriptions for depression treatment, but almost 70% did not use the prescribed medications. Referral to a specialized professional was indicated for 42% (N=24,733) of the pregnant women. Among the women who received a referral, almost 20% were unable to attend appointments with the specialist. Bearing in mind the non-negligible consequences of non-adherence to mental health care, it is crucial to include the topic in the health agenda, creating alternatives to face the reasons that force women to give up treatment for this important health problem.
