Aesthetic Experiences, Ancient and Modern.

Authors

Grethlein, Jonas

Abstract

An essay about ancient and modern conceptions of aesthetic experience is presented. Literary theorist Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht's view on aesthetic experience is discussed. According to the author, ancient authors and philosophers such as Plato and Socrates provide fascinating material for the current discussion on aesthetic experience. The author adds that their emphasis on the immersive power of art can stimulate an aesthetic theory. The capacity of narrative to trigger experiences is tackled.
