Toward a Native American Theology of Animals: Creek and Cherokee Perspectives.

Abstract

An essay is presented on Native American animal theology. It offers a discussion of the roles of animals in Native American creation myths, their status as people in many traditions, and their relationship to humans. Details related to Creek and Cherokee cosmology, Native Americans' dependence on animals for physical and spiritual survival, and previous scholarly work on animal theology are also presented.
