Title

Overview of Infant and Pediatric Formulas.

Authors

Joeckel, Rebecca J.; Phillips, Sharon K.

Abstract

The article examines types of infant and pediatric formulas. The major categories of infant formulas based on protein content are cited. The most common formulas given to infants who are not breastfeeding are standard cow's milk-based formulas. Soy formulas are given to infants with lactose intolerance and galactosemia. Protein hydrolysate formulas contain casein and/or whey and are given to infants who are intolerant to intact cow's milk and soy proteins. It also discusses amino acid-based formulas, carbohydrate-free formulas, prethickened formulas and polymeric formulas.
