The author discusses pediatric anesthesiologists' involvement in the diagnostic or therapeutic aspects of most rare diseases. Topics covered include keeping up to date on anesthesia-related data on diseases, diseases with an increased risk of anesthetic morbidity or mortality such as Hurler's disease, and the need for pediatric anesthesiologists to develop a rare disease reflex in case of abnormal reactions to uneventful anesthesia.
