Rigid tube‐contractile sheaths provide a mechanism for delivering proteins and DNA across the cell envelope. Evolutionarily related contractile injection systems include those of bacteriophage (illustrated her for the T4 tail), type VI secretion systems (T6SS), and tailocins such as the <italic>P. aeruginosa</italic> R‐type pyocins.
