Mycobacterium tuberculosis has a proteasome system including a hexameric ATPase Mpa that directly recognizes and unfolds pupylated substrates for delivery into the 20S proteosome core particle (CP) for degradation. This cut through diagram illustrates with red lines the path available for a protein substrate going through the Mpa axial channel to reach the proteolytic sites inside the beta rings of the CP.
