Cass et al. describe an automated workflow for visualizing and analyzing image cytometry data to facilitate studies of bacterial cell biology. In this example, a colony of Escherichia coli growing from a single progenitor cell was followed for 300 minutes. The color of each cell outline indicates the oldest pole age, including those from the progenitor cell (red), from the second generation (blue), or later generated poles (green).
