The divisome is the macromolecular complex that carries out cell division in Escherichia coli. Disassembly occurs in a coordinated process inverse to assembly (a first-in, first-out principle). Disassembly can be dissected (minimally) into five stages corresponding to the departure of FtsZ and ZapA (green), ZipA and FtsA (red) FtsL and FtsQ (yellow), FtsI and FtsN (grey), and finally FtsN (blue).
