Title

Smoking out tobacco: A vital preventive role for emergency departments.

Authors

Daube, Mike; Jelinek, George A

Abstract

The authors reflect on the role that emergency departments can play in helping patients to stop smoking cigarettes. They suggest that ascertaining the smoking status of patients and providing advice on smoking cessation should become the norm in emergency departments. They argue that health professionals have a responsibility to act through their professional organizations at the political and community level and that emergency departments are no exception.
