The article presents results related to tooth loss and dental caries in a representative sample of adults, aged 35-44 and 65-74 years, examined in Navarra, northern Spain, in 1989. It is a non-fluoridated area, where mainly private dentists provide dental care. Two facts can be emphasized from findings in this area. They are, edentulous rate and restorative level of dental care received by the population in this area is low, as compared with other Industrialized countries. In general, the small amount of restorative treatment found in the population of Navarra can be connected with two factors, the low number of dentists and the predominantly private practice of dentistry.
