The article discusses the black crater of swedes caused by Rhizoctonia solani. It explores the experiment which provides information about a swedes farm in Northumberland in which swedes are affected by a disease which caused black crater-like patches on the roots, or the enlarged hypocotyls. It discusses the swedes' decay which spread only a small distance into an otherwise sound root, and also discusses the patches which are irregular in shape, although frequently oval, with faint zone lines, and the surface pf the affected tissue was dry and scab-like.
