After encountering a possibly novel odour, this African Wild Dog ( Lycaon pictus) sniffed and rolled in it, getting the scent on its body, especially around the face and the neck. The tail up indicates arousal or excitement as a result of rolling in the scent. The adaptive value of this behaviour is still unclear; the most plausible explanations propose that it could either be a way to bring information back to the pack or to mask the dog's odour while hunting.
