Title

ASSESSING PROOFS VIA ORAL INTERVIEWS.

Authors

Soto-Johnson, Hortensia; Fuller, Evan

Abstract

The article presents a qualitative study which explores the use of oral interviews in assessing the students' understanding of abstract algebra and their ability in constructing proofs. It demonstrates the ability of students to understand the ideas necessary for a subgroup proof but unable to produce a coherent written proof. It also indicates that these students could provide fairly sound proofs verbally and discusses the implications of these findings for teaching and future research studies.
