Transgender identities: a contemporary introduction: Alessandra Lemma, Abingdon and New York, Routledge, (Routledge Introductions to Contemporary Psychoanalysis), 2022, 131 pp , £19.37 (pb). IBSN 978-0-36-54824-7.
Lemma illustrates well the necessary complexity and nuance of her psychoanalytic thinking. At the outset, Lemma emphasises that transgender is far from being a homogenous phenomenon: there is heterogeneity "at the level of presentation and phenomenology" (p5) in cross-gender identification and gender non-conformity. Alessandra Lemma steers a path between the view of transgender and medical transitioning as necessarily and always an indication of pathology and that of unquestioning acceptance with little concern as to what is involved psychically or otherwise.
