Abstract: The article reflects on the Gordon Research Conference. The meeting discusses the relation between the statistics of the natural environment and sensory coding in the nervous system. It explores how the response of sensory neurons have been adapted to the statistics of natural scenes. It utilizes a mathematical and a computational models to drive optional neural representations of natural images. It also assesses how natural sensory signals are encoded at various stages of processing.
