Acid hydrolysis of glycoside compounds, methylα- andβ-d-glucopyranosides, was accelerated when KCl or KBr was added to an HCl or HBr system, respectively, consisting of H2O or aqueous 1,4-dioxane. The proton activity and solvent dissociation power of the system were not changed by the addition of the salt. These results confirm our previous suggestion that Br−and Cl−directly participate in the hydrolysis reaction. The extent of participation of the anions was also estimated.
