Gestational alloimmune liver disease (GALD) is a rare and severe illness caused by maternal antibodies against foetal liver. It may cause acute and severe liver failure, or liver disease accompanied by siderosis of extrahepatic tissues. Iron deposits can be confirmed by MRI or by mucosal salivary gland biopsy showing iron staining (Perls stain), although MRI yields a higher sensitivity for such diagnosis (90% versus 60-70%) (Machtei et al. [5]).
