From this department's perspective, the desiccation of Urmia Lake is due to high agricultural water consumption in the basin pursuant to farmers' ignorance of the effects of Urmia Lake's depletion and their inability to use modern irrigation systems. For example, farmers' low income and unemployment are among the main reasons for the drying up of Urmia Lake, so the Ministry of Cooperatives, Labor, and Social Welfare, which is charged with addressing such challenges in Iran, should be involved in reviving Urmia Lake. The desiccation of Urmia Lake in Iran is an environmental catastrophe with international implications both regionally and worldwide.
