Title

Glia: Schwann cells provide life support for axons.

Authors

Whalley, Katherine

Abstract

The article highlights a study that reveals the molecular pathways through which Schwann cells sustain peripheral nervous system (PNS) axon integrity. The researchers generated transgenic mice to examine the role of Schwann cells in axon support by glia. The mice exhibited progressive degeneration of myelinated and unmyelinated axons in the peripheral nerves.
