Title

Structural biology: Activating and guiding Cas9.

Authors

Du Toit, Andrea

Abstract

The article cites a research study by M. Jinek and colleagues published in the journal "Science," which examines structures of Cas9 endonucleases. The CRISPR-Cas adaptive immune systems function in the elimination of foreign nucleic acids. Jinek et al. showed that Cas9 enzyme contain a conserved catalytic core that comprises a nuclease lobe and a variable, alpha-helical lobe.
