Title

Biofilms: Clutch control.

Authors

Molloy, Sheilagh

Abstract

The article discusses the results of a study published in the journal "Science" which elucidated the molecular mechanism by which flagellar motility is disabled in Bacillus subtilis organisms that have formed biofilms. The researchers used suppressor mutations to determine that the EpsE protein was responsible for acting like a clutch on the the flagellum, disengaging it from its power source.
