- Abstract
The book offers a diverse and nuanced portrayal of Chinese dance in the People's Republic of China by expanding our limited Western understandings of Chinese dance as comprised only of either the "divine and ancient" I shenyun i variety or the revolutionary ballets of the Cultural Revolution. Emily Wilcox's remarkable book, I Revolutionary Bodies: Chinese Dance and the Socialist Legacy i , fills an enormous vacancy in English-language historiographies of Chinese dance. Wilcox chronicles the circulation of Chinese dance at international socialist arts festivals and the emergence of Chinese socialist dance dramas during what she terms a golden age of Chinese dance.
