Abstract: The article focuses on the application of magnesium alloys as advanced materials to improve fuel economy, through reduction of gross vehicle weight, without compromising safety. It explores the issues that must be addressed before magnesium alloys can be utilized extensively in an automotive body. These issues include the use of wrought magnesium sheet, incorporation of magnesium into the automotive body, the property of magnesium that is prone to twinning, and joining of magnesium components.
