Title

Carrot somatic embryogenesis. A dream come true?

Authors

Fujimura, Tatsuhito

Abstract

Professor Komamine asked me to refine the system of carrot somatic embryogenesis in 1972. That was a very hard task, but after refining the system, we have understood the process of somatic embryogenesis clearly. The refined system has been used in physiological, biochemical and molecular biological studies of embryogenesis. Culture and embryo induction of carrot cells are easy, but the outcrossing nature of carrots hinders development of genetic and molecular biological analyses of embryogenesis. Rapid development of DNA technologies like next generation sequencing and transformation technique of carrot cells will open the way to clarify the mechanism of carrot somatic and zygotic embryogenesis.
