- Abstract
This study describes a sago starch bio-nanocomposite film created by incorporating flaxseed (FS) extract, zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZNPs), and zinc oxide and magnesia nanoparticles (ZNP-Mgs). Sago starch films were prepared with different concentrations of FS (2.0%,4.0%, and 6.0%. w/w), FS (6.0%) ZNPs (0.01%), and FS (6.0%) ZNP-Mgs (5.0%). The properties of these films were characterized through physicochemical, mechanical, UV–visible, XRD, FTIR, TGA, and antioxidant analyses. Compared to Sago film alone (FS0) and films with varying concentrations of FS, FSZNPs, and FSZNP-Mgs nanoparticles, the results showed that the thickness of the films with different concentrations of FS, FS (6.0%) ZNPs (0.01%), and FS (6.0%) ZNP-Mgs (5%) significantly increased (from 0.22 to 0.35 mm), leading to a reduction in light transmission. The incorporation of FS into the sago starch matrix increased tensile strength, decreased elongation at break, moisture content, and water solubility swelling test, but increased for FSZNP-Mg5%. The findings also demonstrated that adding FS enhanced the films' antioxidant activity compared to FSZNPs and FSZNP-Mgs. FTIR, FESEM, XRD, and TGA analyses confirmed interactions between FS, nanoparticles, and sago. Sago starch films incorporating FS, FSZNPs and FS ZNP-Mgs show potential for application in active packaging within the food industry.
