A solvothermal method is proposed for the preparation of EuS and PrS nanoparticles by the reaction of Eu(Stear)3 (Stear = stearate) and NHEt[Pr(Ddtc)] (Ddtc = diethyldithiocarbamate) with excess carbon disulfide. Raising the temperature of this reaction leads to enhanced monodispersity of the EuS nanoparticles, while a decrease in the concentration of the starting reagents leads to a change in the shape of the nanoparticles from cubic to spherical. The band gaps were determined for the EuS and PrS nanoparticles. No quantum-size effects were found in the optical properties of the EuS and PrS materials obtained.
