Abstract

The timeliness of the development of small nuclear power plants is determined by their economic utility and prospects for use as an energy source in remote regions with decentralized power supply. VNIINM has developed monolithic, self-spaced fuel rods with fuel composition containing uranium dioxide in an aluminum matrix and cladding made from 42KhNM chromium-nickel alloy, for the core of NPP with capacity not exceeding 10 MW. Reactor tests of shortened fuel rods to burnup 135 MW·day/kg (0.9 g/cm3) were conducted in the water loop of the MIR reactor. Post-reactor materials engineering investigations performed at SSC RIAR showed these rods to be highly efficient.
