The aim of the tests was to combine the determination of water, fat and ash in a single operation using samples of about 5 g only. With this modified method, the homogenized sample was spread evenly on to a folded filter and dried in order to determine the water content. The filter with the dried sample was extracted with petroleum benzene in a Soxhlet apparatus. Finally, the fat-free sample was ashed in a crucible. Our own tests showed that the results achieved by the conventional method according to § 35 of the LMBG and those achieved by the modified method differed only very slighty (average difference in values 0.07-0.34% absolute). The differences between the results of six laboratories, participants in a small cooperative test, were on average also very small (0.07-0.50% absolute).
