Alpha-1-microglobulin (A1M) serves as a scavenger to eliminate circulating free fetal hemoglobin which has been proposed to have a role in placental related disorders such as pre-eclampsia (PE) and fetal growth restriction (FGR). A prospective case control study including 192 singleton pregnancies with a diagnosis of normotensive FGR (n=47), PE with appropriate for gestational age fetus (n=45) and PE with FGR (n=51) as well as uncomplicated pregnancies (n=49). Whereas in fetal blood, A1M was significantly lower in FGR fetuses with and without PE with no differences in PE without FGR (table 1).
