Title

The Interaction of Experiments and Ideas: A BSCS-Second Course.

Authors

Abraham, Norman

Abstract

The article describes the experimental edition of the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study, Boulder, Colorado second course which was developed by a team of university biologists and high school biology teachers and has been tested in high schools over a three period. Said course has been criticized for introducing high school students to subject matter normally useful only to science majors in colleges and universities. Evidence has disclosed that such courses often degenerate into the rote memorization of anatomical detail and physiological fact, reinforced by routine laboratory dissection. The preparation of BSCS Second Course is aimed at designing a course that would build upon and extend the rationale of the BSCS program, with an emphasis on the processes involved in biological research.
