Abstract

The starch/PVA films with the addition of 30 wt.% Ca(NO3)2 and different content of Tween 20 are prepared by solution casting. The effect of Ca(NO3)2 on the crystalline, thermal, and mechanical properties of starch/PVA film is studied by X‐ray diffraction measurement, differential scanning calorimetry and tensile testing, respectively. The effect of Tween 20 on the properties of Ca(NO3)2 doped starch/PVA film is studied. The water sorption properties and the water vapor barrier properties of starch/PVA films are studied. The results shows that Ca(NO3)2 can effectively destroy the crystals of starch and PVA. The Ca(NO3)2 doped starch/PVA film shows a high water sorption rate and low water vapor barrier properties. Tween 20 can increase the water resisting properties and increase the flexibility of Ca(NO3)2 doped starch/PVA film. With the combination of Ca(NO3)2 and Tween 20 the flexible starch/PVA film with a high water resisting ability is obtained.
