    OR: after the post mortem<FN>Editor's Note Dr. Ackoff is a world-leading academic, authoring over 20 books and 200 articles; he is also a highly influential practitioner who has worked with more than 350 corporations and 75 government agencies in the U.S.A. and internationally. He has been a pioneer in many aspects of operational research and system sciences and this has been recognized through the award of numerous honours and honorary degrees, and his election to senior office in many professional societies in these fields. He was recently honoured by the establishment of the Ackoff Center for Advancement of Systems Practices at the University of Pennsylvania. However, over the years he has expressed concern and then criticism of Operations Research as a discipline capable of addressing the needs of management in ever increasingly complex times. In this important personal manifesto he explains the reasons for this view and why he now believes that systems thinking and practice offer the holistic perspective and flexibility needed to cope with complexity and to focus on the performance of “wholes rather than parts”. </FN>
