The Belgian start-up Amphistar produces surfactants from residues of the food industry. They use yeasts to produce amphiphilic molecules for cleaners. The surfactants, called sophorolipids, are surface-active and have properties such as wetting, degreasing, and foaming. They are non-irritating, sulfate-free, and biodegradable. The production process converts almost any biomass into biotensides and mainly uses the yeast organism Starmerella bombicola. The procedure was developed and scaled by the Inbio research group at Ghent University and the company Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant.
