Title

Production of Renewable Bioproducts and Reduction of Phosphate Pollution Through the Lime Pretreatment and Acidogenic Digestion of Dairy Manure.

Abstract

The article examines the potential for acidogenic digestion with lime pretreatment to serve as a means of reducing soluble reactive phosphorus concentrations in dairy cattle manure while producing calcium carboxylate salts as a chemical platform for production of fuels and chemicals. When located in small areas, large dairy operations can have negative ecological impacts on watersheds due to nutrient runoff leading to eutrophication in bodies of water. Phosphorus contamination from animal feeding operations has become a leading cause of eutrophication in Central Texas. This study found that soluble reactive phosphate levels can be substantially reduced via the described process.
