- Abstract
This study was conducted to assess the reflections of urban poverty on children's education processes from the perspective of urban poor parents. The research was designed within the framework of a case study model. The study group of the research consists of 22 parents living in Balıbey, Hacırüstem, Karşıyaka, and Camikebir neighborhoods in Muğla province, where poverty is prevalent, and who have children enrolled in primary and/or secondary education institutions in these neighborhoods. Maximum variation sampling was employed in determining the study group of the research. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews conducted with parents in their households, utilizing semi-structured interview forms developed by the researchers. Thematic analysis was adopted in the data analysis. The results obtained from the research indicated that, in addition to the primarily economically-related reflections of poverty, such as sending their children to the desired school, meeting schools' financial support demands, and fulfilling school needs, there are socio-cultural reflections in terms of providing academic support, offering cultural and social support, experiencing discrimination and exclusion, and self-comparisons with peers.
