EU's Audiovisual Media Services Directive: Red Flag or Red Herring?

- Abstract
The article reports on the update of the Audiovisual Media Services without the Frontiers Directive by the European Commission. The update was designed to extend to on-demand audiovisual media the same regulatory framework that applies to broadcast radio and television. It is intended to treat on-demand competitors of broadcast television and is concerned on consumerism including ban convert, overt product placement, commercial endorsements in broadcast and on-demand programming. It is concluded that the version of the directive has been changed to reflect the concerns of many Internet stakeholders.
