- Abstract
The article explores the blurring of gender roles for both men and women in American culture. Contemporary gender role expectations in which women are expected to be strong and beautiful and men are supposed to be strong and sensitive are examined. How the burden of maintaining both traditional roles while assuming characteristics of the opposite gender has created a backlash against the feminization of masculine culture is discussed. Particular attention is paid to the rise of magazines such as "Maxim" that feature chauvinistic male attitude and the popularity of television shows where women are absent such as "Monster Garage" and "American Chopper." The character of Lara Croft in Tomb Raider video games and films is discussed as the embodiment of feminine duality in popular culture.
