- Abstract
Shipbuilding of naval and merchant ships of different types and sizes has required a profound knowledge of every constitutive element. Bolts and nails, in particular, played a significant role as they maintain joined and secured the main structural components of wooden hulls. This article aims to contribute to assess the technical issues of the elements used within the Spanish shipbuilding during the 17th and 18th centuries. Based on contemporary naval treatises, basic notions on morphology and size of metal bolts and nails will be described. Furthermore, manufacturing methods and materials used will be developed. This analysis is focused on ships from the Spanish Navy. The data obtained will contribute to discussing the standardization degree of the structural fastenings used for ships construction of the period, which are of special value for the analysis and interpretation of evidence from shipwrecks.
