- Abstract
It was done on an experiment aiming to evaluate the use of lighting programs on the behavior and performance of growth pigs. The experiment was conducted at the swine sector of UFLA, Lavras, MG, Brazil, using 48 castrated male pigs with an average initial weight of 29.99±0.05kg and 76.66±0.84kg. The animals were housed in groups of two in each pen, forming the experimental unit. The animals were distributed in randomized blocks, according to the initial weight in four treatments (lighting programs): LN: natural light (control-LN), 15 hours of light and nine hours of dark for day (15L:9D), 19 hours of light per day (19L:5D), 23 hours of light per day (23L:1D). The experiment lasted 45 days. The diets were formulated to meet the requirements of the animals according to the Brazilian Tables 2011.The variables analyzed were the animals' behavior (drinking, rooting, leisure and eating), performance (average daily feed intake, daily weight gain, feed conversion and final weight). The use of lighting programs for growing pigs caused a modification in their behavior, making them more active, especially at night. Programs light did not affect the performance of these animals, making unnecessary the use of supplemental light for growing pigs.
