- Authors

- Abstract
Over the past two decades, there have been two major developments in the surgical management of colorectal cancer; laparoscopic approach for resection and the Enhanced Recovery Programme (ERP). The laparoscopic technique is proven to offer better short-term outcomes in terms of faster recovery, less postoperative pain, analgesia requirement, postoperative complication rate and shorter hospital stay. The ERP has been introduced recently to replace conventional recovery following surgery for bowel cancer with a holistic, multi-modal integrated care pathway. This system has proven to reduce complications and also shorten hospital stay. This article highlights the main components of the ERP, including laparoscopic technique for managing bowel cancer.
