- Abstract
The article critiques the passage called "Careful Ploughman," from the epic poem "Paradise Lost," by John Milton. It addresses the simile describing the martial tension between Archangel Gabriel's troop and the apprehended fallen angel and prince of darkness Satan, Satan's image of angelic subservience suggesting instruments of terrestrial husbandry, and Milton's description of the phalanx as thick as a field.
