- Abstract
A letter published in Acta Diabetologica discusses a retrospective cohort study on female patients with maternally inherited diabetes and deafness (MIDD) due to specific genetic variants. The study found that 25% of the patients experienced miscarriages, 24% had gestational diabetes, 13.6% had preterm deliveries, and there were cases of preeclampsia and postpartum hemorrhage. However, the letter raises concerns about the study's small sample size, lack of a control group, and retrospective design. The letter suggests that a larger, prospective, multicenter study is needed to determine if MIDD patients are truly at an increased risk of obstetric complications. The letter also highlights other limitations of the study and calls for further investigation into the genetic factors and diabetes control that may contribute to these complications.
