- Abstract
The editor of the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy has kindly invited me to comment on the paper by Krasemann & Hildenbrand, entitled “Interpretation of Agar Diffusion Tests”, which appeared in a previous issue. In my work as a clinical microbiologist I have often found verbal discussions to be both rewarding and stimulating, and sometimes they have sown the seeds of lasting friendship. Discussions in print, on the other hand, tend to generate misunderstandings, even animosity, and therefore are preferably to be avoided. But because the mentioned paper assails pivotal aspects of the research which I initiated in the early 1950's and in the guidance of which I am still involved, I have accepted the editor's invitation. Together with colleagues currently engaged in research on microbial susceptibility to antibiotics, I have reviewed some pertinent aspects of this subject. We hope thereby to increase clarity on essential points in an area of world-wide interest.
