- Abstract
This article presents an overview of the past, present, and future of wood preservation. It discusses that wood products used in exterior applications must be protected against biodeterioration by decay fungi, insects, and other organisms. Wood products traditionally used for residential or industrial applications have been protected by treatment with chromated copper arsenate or older inexpensive organic biocides. However, environmental and disposal concerns, as well as governmental regulations have resulted in a rapid and dramatic worldwide shift to copper-based system.
