- Abstract
The article attempts to classify Symphony no. 1 in C-Major by Carl Maria von Weber to a specific style period – the Classicism or the Romanticism. Due to the time when it was written (i.e., the beginning of the 19th century) the piece combines the features of the “musical past” with elements characteristic of the “musical future” following it. What had a significant influence on the shape of this composition – its style, way of narration, and even its orchestration, were the idyllic circumstances of Weber’s stay in prince Württemberg’s estate in Carlsruhe (now Pokój near Opole), hence they were described vividly and in detail. Even how Weber himself referred to his stay in Carlsruhe – he called it the time of his life; the period when he was free from everyday worries and felt generously endowed with the best working conditions any composer could dream of – is intriguing and encouraging to learn more about this fragment of the biography of the creator of Der Freischütz. The frequent marginalisation of the historical importance of Symphony no. 1 is unjustified because it has extremely rich content, in which Weber included already pre-romantic elements in a still classical form. The article widely discusses the elements constituting the form of the symphony in terms of their stylistic provenance, it presents common features with the works of other composers, as well as ground breaking elements. It was this very composition with which Carl Maria von Weber “foretold” distinctive features of his future style, operatic style in particular. The historical transition from slightly reserved classical narration to expressions full of romantic emphasis was marked with intertwined styles and conventions, a model example of which is precisely Symphony no. 1 in C-Major, where – fighting to be in the lead – two different musical styles combine and harmonise, and they do so surprisingly well.
