- Abstract
The article discusses the social conditions of women engaged in domestic service in Santiago, Chile and their children at the turn of the 20th century, particularly focusing on the care of these children in orphanages. The author details the connections between servant mothers, wet nurses, orphanage nurses, and these children as a means to describe the social organization of domestic labor in Santiago at this time. Aspects of Chilean society analyzed include labor markets, class relations, and conceptions of domesticity.
