- Abstract
This article is a tribute to Eta S. Berner, a prominent figure in the field of biomedical and health informatics who passed away in December 2023. Dr. Berner made significant contributions to the field through her research and publications, particularly in the areas of diagnostic decision support systems, informatics education, and professional ethics. Her work was published in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association (JAMIA), and she also served on the JAMIA Editorial Board. Dr. Berner's influence extended internationally, and she contributed to the development of clinical decision support systems and health information exchange. The article highlights five papers in the February 2024 issue of JAMIA that are related to Dr. Berner's contributions in diagnostic decision making, informatics education, ethics, and evaluation. These papers explore topics such as the use of machine learning in predicting diagnostic accuracy, integrating digital literacy into pharmacy programs, ethical considerations in developing machine learning tools for clinical care, and evaluation frameworks for health interventions. The authors emphasize the rigorous evaluation methods employed in these papers, which align with Dr. Berner's approach. They conclude that while the technologies and context may change, the fundamental principles exemplified in Dr. Berner's work remain relevant and influential.
