- Abstract
University education can be thought of as temporality, where the past refers to the baggage of intellectual knowledge that the student carries when entering university; the present refers to the student attending higher education; the future refers to the professional generalist who needs to be prepared. The Academic Triathlon program includes teaching, researching, and extension activities in order to interrelate past, present, and future. It was developed for first-year students of Mackenzie Presbyterian University's School of Engineering. It has three projects focused on the basic training of students (University Challenge), on higher education training related to the curricular components of Physics and Calculus (Do you know!?.), and on research to solve related problems to the needs of people in the cities where they live, based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and with a view to the 2030 Agenda (Smart Cities). The use of active methodologies was a way to achieve transformative learning to make the courses more attractive, integrative and innovative and to help develop soft skills in the students. The university needs to act effectively in the technical training of students in each course and in developing socio-emotional aspects. For the first edition of 2021, the program had the participation of 384 students, offering the opportunity for a closer relationship with professors and peers, culminating with a better engagement of these students in courses and the academic environment. This program enables working on actions related to the university tripod: teaching, researching, and extension.
